Undoubtedly one of Frankl’s masterpieces, the Amoeba Coffee Table remains a modernist icon of the mid-century
Defined by its cork tabletop and outward-facing legs, the table was introduced as a “cocktail table,” offering a more relaxed alternative to the traditional coffee table and reflecting shifting ideas around modern living.
Out of production since the 1950s, it has become highly sought after by auction houses and antique dealers worldwide. It has now been reissued by NO GA in collaboration with the Paul T. Frankl Estate.
The Amoeba Coffee Table reflects a shift in Frankl’s work from strong geometry and vertical lines toward a more organic form. Its biomorphic shape was likely influenced by Scandinavian designers such as Alvar Aalto and Kaare Klint, while still carrying Frankl’s distinctive character.
DESIGNER
Paul T. Frankl was an Austrian-born designer and architect recognised for his groundbreaking contribution to modernist furniture design across both structured and organic expressions.
Nordiska Galleriet was founded in 1912, during the Swedish Grace era – a time that united classical ideals with modernity. The restrained elegance, the exact proportions, and the importance of craftsmanship still characterise their view on contemporary design and are reflected in the design pieces they carry today.
