Paul T. Frankl was an Austrian-born designer and architect who played a key role in shaping early modern furniture in the United States. While his career developed in New York and later Los Angeles, his European training informed a design approach grounded in structure, proportion, and clarity; qualities closely aligned with Scandinavian modernism

Frankl first gained recognition in the 1920s with his “Skyscraper” series, where furniture forms echoed the New York’s growing skyline. These pieces were defined by strong geometry, vertical lines, and a striking simplicity that reflected the modernist spirit of the time.

His style continued to evolve. In the 1940s, his work shifted toward softer, more organic forms. The Amoeba Table (also called Model No. 5005 and the Cloud Table) is one of his most recognised designs from this period, marking a transition from Art Deco toward a more natural and experimental modernism.
