Alfred Christensen was a Danish cabinetmaker, manufacturer and designer who played an important role in the development of Danish mid-century furniture.
As co-owner and chief designer of Slagelse Møbelværk, he combined traditional craftsmanship with an instinct for emerging trends.
Born into a family of furniture makers, Christensen founded Slagelse Møbelværk with his younger brother Erik in 1931. While Erik managed the workshop and business, Alfred led the design department, developing furniture that evolved from classical influences towards the modernism of the post-war period.
From the late 1940s, Christensen increasingly collaborated with leading architects, while continuing to design himself. His Model 185 sofa, later reissued as the Tissø Sofa, reflects his distinctive approach to familiar forms, while the Boomerang chair became one of Slagelse Møbelværk’s most recognisable designs.
