THIS CHRISTMAS

Christmas is one of our favourite times of the year here at Great Dane.

We love the sense of tradition associated with a day like Christmas.

These are ideals that Great Dane champions every day, and through discussions with valued suppliers, media partners and friends in the industry, we realised that we were not alone in this outlook.

We asked some of those friends what it is about Christmas that makes it so special, as well as some of their favourite memories of the holiday.

The responses have been overwhelming to say the least, and as far as we’re concerned, represent the cornerstone of what Christmas should be about.

Throughout the month of December, Great Dane looks forward to sharing these responses with you, spreading old-fashioned Christmas cheer and reminding everybody to take stock of what’s really important this festive season.

CLAIRE DELMAR

"My father would jump out of our living room window and into the pool on Christmas Day as a yearly tradition. As a small child it was a great amusement watching your father who was reserved and sensible doing something so daring and fun!" – Claire Delmar

This Christmas, I’d love to receive: I would have said the Møller Bench #63 in oak, however I do already own this and it remains my most prized possession. As a stylist and designer, I’m surrounded by so much beauty and great design, and to be honest I purchase so little for myself, that when I do it has to be a piece that stands out that I love and covet before procuring. My current obsession is the Asplund Petit Palais side table in charcoal, so this would be my second option. I absolutely adore the surrounding tubular panels, colour and texture and have photographed it around 5 times since it landed!

My favourite thing about Christmas is: The feeling of excitement in the air, not just on the day but leading up to it as well. Seeing the magic light up on my kids’ faces as I put them to bed the night before and the anticipation and excitement to awake to Santa. The fun of forgetting to move around elf on the shelf and trying to explain to my kids why he didn’t move! And of course, preparing and enjoying meals with loved ones… It’s such a special time of year it’s too hard to pick just one.

A treasured Christmas tradition or memory is: My father would jump out of our living room window and into the pool on Christmas Day as a yearly tradition. As a small child it was a great amusement watching your father who was reserved and sensible doing something so daring and fun!

SIMONE HAAG

"I am a ceramic-a-holic so any beautiful cabinet that allows me to collect and display more ceramics would make me happy! " - Simone Haag.

This Christmas, I’d love to receive: I would love to receive the Bastone cabinet. I am a ceramic-a-holic so any beautiful cabinet that allows me to collect and display more ceramics would make me happy! This piece allows objects to be revealed slowly through the vertical timber dowels, some stacked books and elements of green would complete the picture.

My favourite thing about Christmas is: We all head to our beach house affectionately known as Anglers Shack. Family descend, we oscillate between the local beach (Surfies Point) or back at the house, relaxing in a camping chair with our feet in the toddler wading pool with a crisp French champagne in hand.

Nibbles are an event in themselves and the kids enjoy the hot days and starry, starry nights - usually capped with some possum prowling. I am not a good cook, so we hijack the in-laws place for a good feed or rely on calamari and salad.

SARAH–JANE PYKE

"Long days with family, seeing all the cousins, second cousins, all their children, and all the chaos that comes with that." – Sarah-Jane Pyke

This Christmas, I’d love to receive: The Dornstab Floor lamp is classic perfection. I love the shape, the quality of the light, and the clever shade.

My favourite thing about Christmas is: Long days with family, seeing all the cousins, second cousins, all their children, and all the chaos that comes with that.

A treasured Christmas tradition or memory is: My family has always celebrated Christmas Eve, and it's still my favourite Christmas ritual. The last few years have been dinner in my back yard and I just love it.

CLAIRE LARRIT–EVANS

"Speeches. It’s a tradition in our family, often there are tears and always laughter."  – Claire Larrit-Evans

This Christmas, I’d love to receive: It would have to be the Taro Table in the large round format designed by Jasper Morrison. We recently used this in one of our projects, I love the overall simplicity of the design and the beautiful clean oak finish.  Perfect for gathering large groups of friends or families around the table!

My favourite thing about Christmas is: The long lunch! We celebrate in the same way each year with a long lunch down at the family beach house. We are a very large and very loud family, so lunch starts around two o’clock in the afternoon and often ends up around the fire talking late into the night.

A treasured Christmas tradition or memory is:  Speeches. It’s a tradition in our family, often there are tears and always laughter - I love that the next generation of children are now the ones often leading the speeches, mostly just cracking jokes but a few heartfelt words of love and gratitude are spoken.

FIONA AUSTIN

"The family all gathered together – we have three generations – usually everyone is relaxed and happy with the holidays ahead." – Fiona Austin

This Christmas, I’d love to receive: The Flag Halyard chair. I love this Hans Wegner chair for a few reasons, firstly it’s a mid-century chair and mid-century design is a passion of mine (Beaumaris Modern). Secondly, the chair says come and relax – it’s hard to find a chair that you can really relax into. I also appreciate the combination of stainless steel, cord, leather and sheepskin. The chair although designed in 1950 is a timeless design that still is a statement piece in a new contemporary home.

My favourite thing about Christmas is:  The family all gathered together – we have three generations – usually everyone is relaxed and happy with the holidays ahead. We all cook together (we all have our individual specialities!) Then we sit down with our Christmas crackers, (and hats from the crackers!), a beautifully set table and enjoy sharing food, wine and each other’s company.

A treasured Christmas tradition or memory is:  Christmas morning, the tradition for my sister and I when we were children was to open the presents in our ’Santa sacks’ in the living room with our parents watching on - (we also had a special breakfast of half a mango which was an enormous treat then, as they were not so readily available - my mother is from Queensland). We continued that tradition with our children… in fact our sons are now 24 and 28 and they still like the ‘Santa sacks’ and we still sit and watch them open their presents!
