The Mystery of the Australia Sofa
I read the email, it was from a Wikkelsø fan who had purchased a very rare example of Wikkelsø's work and was asking if I had any information about the sofa. They thought, as we had the V11 and ML series by Wikkelso in production, that we might know something. It was such a great coincidence not only as it was Australia Day, but I too had been communicating with the Wikkelsø family about this sofa. I had always loved it and wanted to put it back into production.
Both the Wikkelsø family and I have done exhaustive research as to why the sofa is named the 'Australia sofa', and the great mystery remains, on nearly every blog and Scandinavian classic furniture website it is referred to as the Australia Sofa.I love it, the fact that something designed by an iconic designer so long ago has come back into production with the assistance of an Australian company manufacturing in Scandinavia.
What are my thoughts on why it’s named The Australia Sofa? It's a very rare 4 seater sofa, the Danes rarely produced them at this size. At over 2.6m long, it’s not something we ever see from the Scandinavian classic period. So perhaps - as inspiration with much of his work was nature - the vast open landscapes of Australia inspired this piece.I love the story as it speaks to our inherent connection with Wikkelsø, as a country and for us at Great Dane. It was meant to be."
