A String Garden Party
It all began 70 years ago...
In 1949, the leading Swedish publishing house Bonniers realised that people would likely buy more books if they had somewhere to put them. With this in mind, Bonniers launched a competition calling for a shelving solution that was affordable, easy to ship, easy assemble and easy to install.
Married couple Nils and Kajsa Strinning entered and won the competition with their ingenious solution: a flexible, elegant and minimalist shelving system that could be mounted on any wall. And voilà: String® was born!
Our recent guests Peter Erlandsson and Pär Josefsson’s involvement with String® began in 2004, when Peter’s wife, who at the time was running a design store in southern Sweden, was approached by a customer wanting to purchase some String® shelves.
Peter investigated on her behalf, and soon discovered that the company that controlled the product had stopped operating the week prior! After discussing with his business partner Pär, the pair decided to approach Niise Strinning, who by this time was 87 years old. They explained their vision for the company and their belief in the product. Strinning liked what he heard, selling the rights to Peter and Pär to produce and sell String®, before the pair purchased the brand outright in 2009.
Peter and Pär remain owners of the brand to this day and have overseen the company as it brings String® Galvanised to the market for the first time in 2019, String®'s 70th year.
Given the outdoor nature of String®'s latest shelving system, The Plant Society served as a suitably lush and verdant location for Great Dane friends to toast one of Sweden's most loved, timeless and fastest growing brands as they venture ever onwards and ever outwards.
Thank you to all our guests for helping us celebrate. There is no denying the importance of String® in Scandinavia's design history and culture. Happy Birthday to brand we are so proud to represent here in Australia.

Cheers to String in every room and garden!
